Click to Cancel

Have you heard of “Click to Cancel”? It’s about making it fairer for people to cancel subscriptions. Today, signing up is often fast and easy—sometimes just one click—while cancelling can be the exact opposite, and often by design. Many companies hide cancellation options behind multiple steps or require customers to contact customer service, trapping people in services they no longer want.

That’s why I tabled legislation on “Click to Cancel,” which would require businesses to provide a simple, accessible way to cancel subscriptions—just as easy as signing up. It’s about transparency, fairness, and protecting consumers from unnecessary costs and frustration.

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:

WHEREAS many sign up for free trials or subscriptions and experience difficulties when they want to cancel;

AND WHEREAS signing up for these subscriptions is often quick and easy, sometimes requiring only a single click;

AND WHEREAS these practices can trap consumers in unwanted subscriptions, resulting in unnecessary costs and frustration;

AND WHEREAS consumers deserve fair, transparent, and simple cancellation processes;

WE, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:

That the Government of Ontario introduce legislation requiring that businesses provide a simple, clear, and accessible “click to cancel” option, allowing consumers to cancel subscriptions as easily as they signed up.
